چکیده

The increasing interest to establish significant correlations between blood cell mechanical measurements and diseases, has led the promotion of microfluidic devices as attractive clinical tools for potential use in diagnosis. A multi-step device able separate red white cells (RBCs WBCs) from plasma simultaneously measure deformability (5 20% hematocrit) is presented this paper. employs passive separation based on cross-flow filtration principle, introduced at each daughter channel. At outlets, hyperbolic geometries allow single-cell analysis. was tested with five healthy fifteen diabetic type II voluntary donors. results have shown that WBCs lower than RBCs, no differences were observed pathological samples. In contrast, RBCs differences, exhibiting deformability. Shear rheology patients diabetes higher viscosity This demonstrated ability reduce concentration outlets down 1%, an ideal assessing deformability, under conditions. provide new insights quantitative information about hemodynamics vitro mellitus RBCs. Thus, such can be a promising complement diagnosis biological research part integrated blood-on-a-chip system.

Microfluidic device for label-free measurement of platelet activation.

In this work we demonstrate a new microfluidic method for the rapid assessment of platelet size and morphology in whole blood. The device continuously fractionates particles according to size by displacing them perpendicularly to the fluid flow direction in a micro-fabricated post array. Whole blood, labeled with the fluorescent, platelet specific, antibody PE-anti-CD41, was run through the dev...

A microfluidic device for practical label-free CD4(+) T cell counting of HIV-infected subjects.

Practical HIV diagnostics are urgently needed in resource-limited settings. While HIV infection can be diagnosed using simple, rapid, lateral flow immunoassays, HIV disease staging and treatment monitoring require accurate counting of a particular white blood cell subset, the CD4(+) T lymphocyte. To address the limitations of current expensive, technically demanding and/or time-consuming approa...

Label-free quantitation of peptide release from neurons in a microfluidic device with mass spectrometry imaging.

Microfluidic technology allows the manipulation of mass-limited samples and when used with cultured cells, enables control of the extracellular microenvironment, making it well suited for studying neurons and their response to environmental perturbations. While matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry (MS) provides for off-line coupling to microfluidic devices for c...
